Travelling to Fiji with kids

As a midwife and mum of 4, Fiji is my favourite place to travel with (or without) kids!! Picture crystal clear blue water, golden sand and beautiful flowers everywhere – what isn’t to love about that. Fiji is a small island in the South Pacific that is not only absolutely picturesque but it is the perfect family holiday destination. More importantly than the beautiful location is the Fijian people, they are one of the most kind, caring and loving people you will come across. In this blog, I’ll share the reasons why Fiji should be top of the list for your next family getaway as well as tips for travelling with kids!

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

  1. Family Friendly Resorts: There are so many Fiji resorts that are completely planned around families. Most resorts have Kids Clubs that are jam packed with age-appropriate supervised activities. This means that the kids actually enjoy kids club and want to go… which means you get to indulge in some much-needed relaxation. Apart from the much-needed kids clubs, most Fiji resorts have spacious family rooms, pools and play areas to keep kids enjoying their holiday too.

  2. Water Activities: Fiji is known for it’s beautiful beaches, however many families don’t realise that the water on Denarau is not the postcard clear water. The water on Denarau is safe to swim in and participate in water activities such as kayaking. BUT If you’re looking for the picture perfect blue water, the Coral Coast is where you want to be. The Coral Coast provides the clear water, vibrant coral reefs and amazing snorkelling or scuba diving. We recently stayed at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa on the Coral Coast and the beach access and ocean swims were a game changer with the kids. There is something about swimming in the ocean that you just can’t get from swimming in hotel pools.

  3. Cultural Activities: The Fijian culture is beautiful, educational and enriching especially for children. They have local village tours that you can organise with the locals to learn about their culture up close. They also have many different traditional ceremonies, fire dancing ceremonies and storytelling that you can be a part of. The Fijian fire dancers are amazing to watch and the kids just absolutely love getting involved.

  4. Land Activities: There are so many beautiful activities that can be done on land in Fiji. From visiting the Kula Eco Park to get up and close with the Fijian Wildlife, to walks to breathtaking waterfalls, ziplining adventures or exploring the local markets. There is so much more outside of the hotel walls for you to explore and enjoy.

Practical Tips for Travelling to Fiji with Kids

  1. Pack smart not more: Use the Bunnie Caddie Packing Cubes to organise your suitcases and make packing easier. We always pack our swimmers in our carry on bag, because the minute the kids get there, feel the heat and see the pools you can bet they’ll be eager to get in! Make sure to pack light weight clothing as Fiji is a tropical climate. Make sure to pack sunscreen, insect repellent and any medications you may need when you’re over there.

  2. Bunnie Caddie Pouch: Taking a Bunnie Caddie Pouch full of toys that can keep baby entertained while you’re on the aeroplane, at dinners or hanging by the pool can make your holiday with a toddler so much easier.

  3. Organise babysitting through the hotel: Organising your baby sitter through the hotel will take the stress out of kid free date nights together. It’s important to know that the Fijian’s don’t often see much of the money being paid for babysitting, so if you have any spare money they are so grateful for tips.

  4. Take the kids water bottles with you: When you’re in Fiji, it is humid which means that the kids may be more likely to become dehydrated. Often the hotels have filtered water bottle filling stations or complimentary water bottles provided to you.

  5. Plan activities in advance: This is because if you plan activities directly through the hotels they will add on a charge. Having pre organised activities and transport can make travelling with kids so much easier.

  6. Give back: If you’re looking at giving back while in Fiji, visit Treasure House Orphanage. This is a way to educate your children about other cultures and giving back. If you have any spare baby items, they are always grateful for donations as well.

Our top picks:

  1. Our Favourite Hotels for Kids on Denarau: The Sheraton Denarau Villas & The Sofitel Fiji Resort

  2. Our Favourite Hotels for Kids on the Coral Coast: The InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa

  3. Lunch & Dinner picks outside the hotel on Denarau: Walk or catch the Bulla Bus down to the Marina and you cannot go past Mamas Pizza!! They are hands down the best and biggest pizza you will have! If you’re looking for something a little more fancy, try Cardos at the Marina. If you’re looking for a quick and easy lunch, check out the Sheraton Golf Club or Lulus Café at the Marina.

  4. Looking for dinner outside of Denarau: My absolute favourite restaurant in Fiji is Daikoku Teppanyaki, Nadi. They have the most fresh and delicious teppanyaki I’ve ever had! Next, you can’t go past the traditional Fijian curries at Legends Bar and Grill (formerly Nadi Farmers Club) just a short taxi away from Denarau. Another delicious meal is Bo Hai Seafood in Nadi, they have the most amazing and fresh Chinese cruisine (and so cheap!).

Fiji is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with their stunning location, welcoming people, enriching culture and family friendly activities. Fiji is the perfect blend of adventure meeting relaxation for the entire family. So, get yourself some Bunnie Caddie Packing Cubes and Pouch Sets and get ready to have an unforgettable family holiday in tropical paradise!
