How to improve healing after birth?

How to help with healing after birth?

One of the most important things to think about when going into the postpartum period is how you can best maximise your healing after birth. I know that sounds pretty simple right, but most new parents are so focused on this gorgeous new little human that they’ve created that they totally forget that they are healing as well…

That is where your BodyICE Maternity Care Box is going to be your best friend, especially in the hospital!

How can ice help with healing your perineal stitches or caesarean wound?

Immediately after birth, if you have had stitches whether that is from your perineum or from a caesarean section icing the area can dramatically help with wound healing. Using ice on your perineum or caesarean wound in the first 24-48 hours can help to reduce inflammation as well as reducing your discomfort. The perineum ice pack in the BodyICE Maternity Care Box is the perfect size to be used on your perineal stitches as well as on your caesarean wound to fully maximise your healing. Always ensure that the perineum strip is removed once it has defrosted. In addition to using your ice packs, lying on your side on a towel with your underwear off can allow your stitches to have some fresh air to further aid your healing.

How can ice help with breastfeeding after birth?

When you milk comes in after birth, you may become engorged. This is where the body sends extra fluid, blood and breastmilk to the breasts causing the breasts to become large and tender. It may also make latching your baby to the breast difficult due to the breasts being overfull.

If you are engorged, icing your breasts after feeds using the BodyICE Breast packs can help to reduce the inflammation in the area, tell your body that you don’t need any extra milk as well as reducing discomfort from the engorgement.

How can warmth help with breastfeeding after birth?

Before your milk comes in, using your BodyICE Breast packs 10-15 minutes before breastfeeding your baby can help encourage the milk ducts to open and help encourage your body to ‘bring the milk in’. Using warmth on the breast can also help maximise the amount of colostrum you are able to hand express, if you are separated from your baby after birth.

It is important not to use heat on your breasts if you are engorged as this may make inflammation worse.

These are just three of the many uses of the BodyICE Woman Maternity Care box in the first week after birth. The maternity care box is an essential item for postpartum recovery for the duration of your breastfeeding journey.
